What Are Root Canals?
A root canal is a procedure that removes infected or inflamed pulp from inside your tooth to stop pain, save the tooth, and prevent infection from spreading.
Despite the name, the root stays in place — only the damaged soft tissue inside is removed.
Afterward, the tooth is cleaned, sealed, and restored — often with a crown — so it looks and functions just like new.
When Is a Root Canal Needed?
We may recommend root canal therapy if you have:
- Persistent toothache or sensitivity
- Swelling or tenderness in the gums
- A deep cavity that reached the pulp
- A cracked, chipped, or injured tooth
- Repeated dental work on the same tooth
Don’t wait — treating the issue early can save your tooth and stop pain from getting worse.

Frequently asked questions
Why might I need a root canal?
A root canal is a treatment used to save a tooth that is severely decayed or infected. If you’re experiencing intense tooth pain, sensitivity, or swelling, it could mean the pulp inside your tooth is damaged or infected. A root canal removes the infected pulp, relieving pain and preventing further damage to your oral health.
What happens during a root canal procedure?
During the procedure, we’ll numb the area around the affected tooth to ensure you’re comfortable. Then, we remove the infected pulp from inside the tooth, clean and disinfect the space, and fill it to prevent future infection. Finally, the tooth is sealed, and a crown is placed if needed to restore its strength and appearance.
What can I expect during recovery?
After a root canal, it’s normal to experience mild soreness for a few days. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help ease any discomfort. Stick to soft foods and avoid chewing on the treated tooth until your dentist gives the go-ahead. Be sure to follow up as recommended to monitor healing and ensure the tooth stays healthy. Regular brushing, flossing, and checkups will help keep your smile in great shape!
